LaFact Cultural presents Carmen Suite, a ballet composed by Alberto Alonso for his wife, prima ballerina assoluta Maya Plisetskaya, who premiered the work in 1967 in Moscow with the city’s Bolshoi Ballet. The ballet was also staged by the Cuban National Ballet in 1967. On this occasion, another great figure in the history of dance, Alicia Alonso, performed the role of Carmen. The music for Carmen Suite, composed by Rodion Shchedrin, is performed by the OSV, conducted by Rubén Gimeno. This production by LaFACT Cultural is faithful to the one first staged at the Teatro García Lorca, in Havana.

The principal dancer roles are taken on by some of the leading lights of ballet: Giada Rossi (soloist of the Compañía Nacional de Danza), in the role of Carmen, perfectly embodying this captivating, rebellious character;Sergio Bernal, elegant and imposing, in the role of Don José and Cristo Vivancos magnificent in his role as the bullfighter Escamillo.

This production is staged with the support of Prelude Events. 

SYNOPSIS

Set in 19th-century Seville, the story revolves around Carmen, Don José and the bullfighter Escamillo. Carmen is a vivacious, free-spirited gypsy woman who works in a tobacco factory. A fight with tobacco smugglers leads to her arrest. While in prison, she meets Don José, an army corporal, and soon finds herself embroiled in a love triangle. She seduces the soldier in order to secure her release from prison. Meanwhile, a bullfighter tries to win her heart. Carmen is harshly criticised by society, which has tragic consequences. She ends up being murdered by Don José.
