Libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Domenico Oliva, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, Luigi Illica, the publisher Giulio Ricordi and Giacomo Puccini himself, based on the eponymous novel by the Abbé Prévost.

First performed at the Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February 1893. First performed in Catalonia at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 5 April 1896.
