Zarzuela in three acts.
Text by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández Shaw.
First performed at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid on 17 February 1923. First performed in Catalonia at the Teatre Tívoli in Barcelona on 12 December 1923.
“Doña Francisquita” is a classic zarzuela and one of the most important works in the genre. Once again, we’ll be able to enjoy zarzuela at the Palau de la Música thanks to the Fundació Òpera a Catalunya, the Chorus of the Associació d’Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès.
Under the musical direction of Miquel Ortega and the stage direction of Rita Cosentino, we’ll listen to a love story featuring the Valencian tenor Enrique Ferrer in the role of music student Fernando, and the Madrid-born soprano Ruth Terán in the role of Francisquita, a young lady from the upper classes.
“Doña Francisquita” is a zarzuela in three acts, with music by Amadeu Vives and libretto by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández-Shaw. The work premiered in Madrid on 17 January 1923 and has enjoyed great success ever since.
The music of “Doña Francisquita” is vibrant, with lyrical passages and lively choral numbers. Amadeu Vives encapsulated the essence of traditional Spanish music in a score full of catchy, engaging melodies. Songs such as “Por el humo se sabe dónde está el fuego” (“Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire”) and “Canción del ruiseñor” (“The Nightingale’s Song”) are much loved by audiences.
