The Concierto de Aranjuez, a masterpiece by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, evokes the beauty and charm of the Royal Palace gardens in Aranjuez. Composed in 1939 in Paris, this concerto for guitar and orchestra captivates audiences with its melancholy and vibrant expression of Spanish landscapes and culture. With its exquisite melodies and rich instrumentation, the Concierto de Aranjuez has become an icon of Spanish classical music, delighting listeners worldwide with its unmatched beauty and elegance.
Renowned guitarist Cañizares, 2023 National Music Award winner, will be the soloist performing this iconic piece. He will also present his latest work, Al-Andalus, released in 2023—a flamenco concerto for guitar and orchestra commissioned by the Spanish National Orchestra and Choir in memory of Paco de Lucía. Al-Andalus, with arrangements by Joan Albert Amargós, features three movements: the first inspired by bulerías, the second by taranta styles, and the third based on tanguillos rhythms.
The program concludes with Feria mágica, a brief overture by Barcelona-born composer Carles Suriñach, embodying the spirit of rebirth with flamenco rhythms, drums, and sacred chants; and Les trompetes de la mort, a powerful piece by Marc Timón, full of expressive intensity, featuring the Orfeó Català Girls’ Choir. Premiered at the Palau de la Música Catalana in 2021, this work is inspired by Irene Solà's acclaimed novel Canto jo i la muntanya balla.
The Al-Andalus concerto for flamenco guitar and orchestra, dedicated to the memory of Paco de Lucía, is Juan Manuel Cañizares' most recent composition. It stands out for its instinctive and refined fusion of classical music and flamenco—a union so natural that it feels as though they draw from the same source. Among other virtues, the piece's descriptive nature emerges from pain, the loss of a soul friend, the nostalgia for what can no longer be recovered, but also the joy that arises from this intimate and artistic experience, heartfelt and valuable.
Cañizares merges classical training with a flamenco soul into a whole, transforming his creations and reinterpretations into a unique and diverse way of making and understanding music. The guitarist and composer is at a creative and expressive peak of undeniable originality and excellence. He moves freely and confidently between the pinnacles of flamenco and classical music, mastering both worlds with the ease of being at home. This is why the embrace in which these two realms merge is so extraordinarily coherent, embodying the immutable spirit of the Al-Andalus concerto.
Ten years of shared work and closeness bonded Cañizares with Paco de Lucía. Over a decade performing together on stages around the world—from Europe to America, Asia to Africa. From this, an eternal flame of deep and intelligent friendship was born, one that even the sudden passing of the maestro from Algeciras, ten years ago, has been unable to extinguish. From this profound absence, from the nostalgia for the maestro and friend, emerges Al-Andalus. A concerto that had been forming over a decade, without Cañizares himself realizing it.
