13th HOLY WEEK TOUR 2024
As every year, the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès organizes the Holy Week Tour with the participation of different choirs from the region. This year, on the 300th anniversary of its premiere, the chosen piece is a selection of excerpts from The Passion according to St. John by J.S. Bach, with a new dramaturgy by Sergi Belbel that portrays "passion as the suffering of the last moments before a person's death. A terminally ill person. The sense (or absurdity) of pain, one's own and that of all family members and the rest of the people surrounding them. This is, therefore, a simple and direct text about the fear of pain and loss. But also, and above all, about accompanying in the process of death, about love and the persistence of life."
The Passion according to St. John premiered in 1724 at the Church of Leipzig and is one of the most important and transcendent works of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Written in the 18th century, this sacred music piece portrays the agony, death, and resurrection of Jesus, reflecting his emotions and suffering. It is considered one of the great masterpieces of Western music. Its deep spirituality, musical expressiveness, and compositional skill make this work a true treasure of classical music.
The production features the participation of actors Mercè Pons, Meritxell Yanes, and Enric López in the narrative roles, and the solo voices of Marta Mathéu and Elionor Martínez (sopranos), Eulàlia Fantova (mezzo-soprano), Joan Francesc Folqué (tenor), and Josep-Ramon Olivé and Elías Arranz (baritones). Participating choirs include Cor Madrigal, Cor de Cambra de la Diputació de Girona, Coral Belles Arts, Cor de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili, and Coral Quòdlibet.
From March 16 to May 4, the production will visit 6 Catalan towns: Molins de Rei, Sabadell, Barcelona, Tarragona, Terrassa, and Girona. All under the direction of Xavier Puig.
The tour begins this Saturday, March 16, at the Church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel in Molins de Rei, and concludes on May 4 at the Auditori de Girona. Each concert will feature different choirs from each locality, and on March 23, all participating choirs will sing together at the Palau de la Música Catalana concert, with over 250 musicians and singers on stage.
